Greece Travel Tips

Do you have your trip planned to Greece? Got the tickets and everything? Did you remember to reserve a Greece hotel room? Not to worry if you haven't. Its quite a simple task especially in the Internet world. Here are some quick tips for you to consider.

First of all, if you want to find a great deal on a Greece hotel, you should think about being as flexible as you can be. If you stay at certain times of the week, month, or even year you can possibly get a better deal. If you can't be that flexible, how about thinking about staying a little farther from your destination. Now, this only works if you are going someplace where there are many people wanting to stay as close as possible. Instead of staying really close, stay a few miles out in a nice Greece hotel. This can save you a bunch of cash. You may need to drive a little farther, but a few cents in gas compared to the extra in the Greece hotel is nothing.

England Travel Tips

So, finding cheap England hotel rates is as simple as searching online. To find cheap England hotel rates you first need to get on the travelandplay.com. Once there, you should go to a search engine to search for cheap England hotel rates. Be specific when using the search engine, however, because you will want to find as much specific information on cheap England hotel rates as possible while weeding out other information. Keep in mind as well that if you do not find the cheap England hotel rates you are looking for on one search engine you can always try another. However, you will find the best cheap England hotel information on some of the larger search engines.

Want to discover one of the world's favorite countries? Here are some basic facts for the traveler in Spain

When to go
In general, late spring and late summer-early autumn are the best times for traveling in Spain. Fair weather is practically guaranteed, and the countryside is at its best.
High summer is stiflingly hot in most inland areas, including Madrid and the inland cities of Andalusia such as Seville and Córdoba. Big cities, especially Madrid, empty during August, with many shops and restaurants closing, though a visit then does have advantages, such as light traffic (you can even find a parking space).
Summer weather is milder along the Mediterranean coast, but July and August in popular resorts such as the Costa del Sol are best avoided unless you like crowds. Summer along the northern coast of Spain, from the Basque Country to Galicia, can be very pleasant.
Winters along the Mediterranean coast are generally mild, but expect occasional heavy rains - alternating with long spells of glorious sunshine - any time between October and April. In inland areas, winter temperatures can reach below freezing and snow is is not infrequent.
Bear in mind Spain's fiestas when planning a trip - be it to go to them, or to avoid them. During major fiestas such as the San Fermin bull runs in Pamplona or the April Fair in Seville, hotel rates double and even so rooms must be reserved months in advance.

Getting There
Practically all transcontinental flights land at Madrid's Barajas airport, so you will need to book an extra flight if you want to travel by air to another destination in Spain. Air fares between North America and Europe are highly competitive. You might find it cheaper to fly to Spain via another European country. Rates between Great Britain and any number of destinations in Spain are especially worth checking out.
Rail communications between the rest of Europe and Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Seville are very good. There are also regular ferries between southern England and northern Spain. Major cities in Spain are well connected to continental Europe and each other by motorway.

Entry Formalities
If you are a citizen of a European Union country, all you need to enter Spain is a national identity card. In the case of the United Kingdom, which does not issue such cards, you'll need a passport. Visas for stays of no longer than 90 days are not required for travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, but South Africans do need to apply for a visa before they leave.

Language
A knowledge of Spanish will enrichen a trip to Spain, but you can get by perfectly well with English in the major destinations. Spaniards are in general friendly and tolerant towards foreign visitors.

Getting Around
Spain is a big country - the second largest in western Europe after France - so don't expect to "do Spain" in a week.
Flights between Spanish cities are frequent, but the fares tend to be high. Iberia, Spanair and Air Europa are the major operators.
Train service between the larger cities is excellent, and irreproachably punctual, but slower in the case of smaller regional cities. The bus is an inexpensive alternative.

Driving in Spain
Renting a car is a reasonably-priced option, and by far the best way to travel if you want to enjoy Spain's rich and varied countryside. The major international car hire firms operate in Spain; local companies usually charge somewhat cheaper rates. In any case, it is usually a better bet to reserve and pay for your rental car from home, before you leave.
To rent a car you have to be over 21 and have a valid driver's license. Your national license is valid for driving in Spain as a tourist.
Major roads are generally good, though traffic can be heavy on more popular routes, especially on weekends or during holiday periods. Local roads range from good and pleasant to hair-raisingly narrow and winding. Enquire locally before embarking on a driver to a distant village, and don't take a road just because it is a reassuring color on the road map.
Avoid driving in cities: it can be a nightmare experience, especially if you're unfamiliar with the city or with some of the quirkier local driving habits. Park in a guarded parking area, and take a taxi, which are very good value in Spain. In Madrid, it's worth familiarizing yourself with the excellent Metro (subway) system.

Money Matters
The official currency in Spain is the Euro
Credit cards are widely accepted in Spain, Visa and Masters more so than American Express or Diners. Provided you know your Personal Identification Number, you can use your card to withdraw cash from ATMs in Spain. Often, you'll find the rate of exchange is more favorable than if you go to a bank or exchange bureau. When exchanging money at a bank, avoid converting small amounts at a time, as the minimum commission charged can be prohibitive.
Most Spanish banks close in the afternoon, all day Saturday during summer, and all day Sunday year round.
Value added tax (IVA) is charged on purchases, at a rate of 16% for most goods and services (it is 7% for hotel accommodation). If you are resident of a non-European Union country, you can get a refund of this tax on purchases over 100 Euros in certain participating shops. The refund can be claimed at the airport customs office on your departure: you can either get cash there, or have them send a check to your home address or credit the amount to your credit card.

Staying in Touch
To call abroad from Spain, dial the international access code (00), then your country code (such as 1 for the US, 44 for Great Britain), then the number. If you have a phone card from your home company, you can place a call by dialing your company's access number in Spain:

ATT 900 990 011
MCI 900 990 014
Sprint 900 990 013
British Telecom 900 990 044

Mobile phones can be used in Spain provided they conform to the European GSM standard and the "roam" feature is activated.

Hotels
In general, hotels in Spain are comfortable and good value. Hotels in large cities such as Madrid and Barcelona are around twice the price as hotels elsewhere in Spain.
Hotels are rated from one to five stars, which gives a rough indication of their facilities, but not of the friendliness or efficiency of the service. Fodor's guide to Spain gives good, up-to-date information on hotels in the major Spanish destinations.
Hotels often offer good deals in slower periods, such as summer in Madrid. When phoning for a reservation, always ask for the room rate, and enquire regarding special offers. Spanish hotels do not normally require your credit card number to accept a reservation.
For more advice on choosing where to stay in Spain, see the article by Nick Inman on Hotels in Spain, and check our Guide to Hotels in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Granada and Seville.

Electrical Current
The electrical current in Spain is 200 volts, 50 cycles AC. Plugs are of the continental type, with two round prongs. American appliances require a transformer and a plug adapter for use in Spain.

    Trip Cancellation & Hospital/Medical Insurances

    Your well being is key

When planning for a trip, insurance is the last thing most people think about. You are busy. There is the flight and accommodation to arrange, the activities to plan, and that new bathing suit to purchase.

No one ever plans on falling ill while on holiday, having to cancel a trip at last moment, or having their luggage lost. Unfortunately these things happen all too often. A travel insurance policy can reduce these risks to help ensure you have a worry-free vacation.

    INSURANCE TYPES

The two most common forms of coverage you should consider are trip cancellation insurance and hospital medical insurance. Trip cancellation coverage protects you from losing the deposit you have paid for your trip or the cost associated with cancelling your trip once you have departed. For visitors to Canada, excess hospital and medical coverage will pay for medical bills as hospitals in Canada can charge thousands of dollars per day.

Another consideration you may have is credit card insurance. We have created a list of questions and general facts to better inform and guide your decision.

    LET US HELP YOU

Contact an Exclusively Canada Travel Specialist
Talk to one of our qualified service agents at Exclusively Canada about protecting yourself while travelling, and have us explain your coverage options. Be sure to ask your agent about any plan exclusions or limitations, and how much coverage you are purchasing. You may also want to ask the agent to help you determine whether you have any pre-existing conditions that may affect your policy.

Exclusively Canada offers travel insurance from TIC Travel Insurance Coordinators. TIC has been providing Canadians and visitors to Canada with exceptional and affordable insurance products for over 30 years.

Traveling in Canada - What to Know

    It's all in the details
From vibrant cities to outdoor adventures there are many types of travellers and experiences. Make the best of your trip, and keep our travel tips in mind when planning and taking your trip.

    HEALTH INFORMATION

No Vaccinations are required. Canadian hospitals and medical services are excellent. The vast majority of hospitals are publicly managed and rates are set by provincial and hospital authorities. Hospital care for non-residents of Canada is charged at a daily rate or on the basis of the medical condition and length of stay. Charges vary from province to province and from hospital to hospital, but generally range from $1,000 to $2,000 a day. So it's important to obtain travel health insurance before leaving home, since it's possible your regular health insurance does not include coverage outside your country of residence.

For more information visit: Health Canada

    DRIVING & VEHICLES

A Vehicle Licensing Fee (VLF) and an Airport Concession Fee Recovery (CFR) are included in the rental rate as have Government surcharges and taxes. Optional items such as refueling, additional personal insurance or additional authorized driver (AAD) fees are extra and payable locally. Drop fees are also payable locally, ask your travel agent for the approximate drop charge applicable to your reservation. Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is approximately $25.00 a day, check your automobile policy. Rates cannot be combined with any other offer, discount or promotion. Hertz standard age, driver, and credit applications apply. Rates include unlimited mileage at participating locations. Drivers must be 25 years of age and present a valid national or international drivers license, a return airline ticket and the Hertz car rental confirmation number. A credit card in the driver's name is also required.

    Driving Laws
Canadians drive on the right side of the road (same as the U.S.) and use the metric system for distances and speeds, kilometres/hour rather than miles. Traffic in both directions MUST stop when school buses have their red lights flashing (this means children are getting off and on the bus). At a 4-Way-Stop intersection the first vehicle at the intersection has right-of-way. You must have a valid driving license and auto insurance to drive a vehicle in Canada. A driving license from any country is valid for the first three months, while an International Driving Permit (available in your home country) can be used for one year. Seatbelts are mandatory for drivers and passengers in Canada, except in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

For more information visit: Transport Canada

    Border Crossing
Bringing a vehicle across the border into Canada is generally routine. If customs permits are required, they will be issued at the time of entry. Visitors driving rental cars should have a copy of the rental agreement in the vehicle at all times, endorsed for entry into Canada.

    Driving Distances
Do you want to know how far it is to drive between different cities in Canada? Check here to find out the shortest driving distances between two cities:

    Driving Distances (in kilometres)

    AIRPORTS

The AIP (airport improvement fees) is no longer collected separately. They are now included in the airfare at all Canadian airports.

For more information visit: Transport Canada - Air Travel

    CUSTOMS & dUTIES

Passports are required except for US Citizens who may use a photo I.D. with an original or certified copy of your Birth Certificate. This must be carried to confirm U.S. citizenship when re-entering. Visas may be required depending on a client's citizenship. A visitor to Canada may bring the following into Canada duty-free: necessary personal items, including clothing: up to 50 cigars; 200 cigarettes; 1 kg. (2.2 lbs) tobacco; and 1.1 liters (40 oz) of spirits or wine, or, in lieu, 24 x 355 ml (12 oz) cans or bottles of beer or ale. Gift packages may be sent from Canada to another country duty and tax free if the item is $50 or less. It is illegal to bring revolvers, pistols and fully automatic firearms into Canada.

For more information visit: Canada Border Services Agency

    TAXES & TIPPING

    Tipping
Generally, restaurant bills do not include a tip or service charge. It is standard practice to tip your server 15% of the total bill before taxes. Service personnel at fast food outlets do not expect tips however it is standard practice to tip barbers, hairdressers, and taxi drivers 10 - 15% of your total bill. The customary gratuity to tour guides and motorcoach drivers is $3.00 - $5.00 per day, per person.

    Taxes
Provincial Sales Tax "PST" will be added to the advertised price of consumer products, as well as restaurant meals and beverages, except in provinces that have no Provincial Sales Tax. The applicable rate of Provincial Sales Tax varies from province to province. In addition, a Federal Goods and Services Tax "GST" will be added to virtually every transaction for consumer goods and service within Canada. This Federal tax is currently 6%. In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland, a harmonized Sales Tax "HST" of 14% (6% GST 8% provincial component) is charged on goods and services. (Note that in Québec and Prince Edward Island only, the GST is included in the provincial sales tax base).

Yes, you are standing in Rome, the center of the Roman Empire some 2000 years ago. Rome managed to gracefully weave its past with today's engineering, fashion, and character, making it a vibrant city attracting visitors worldwide.

Aside from time-tested, breathtaking sites like the Colosseum, Pantheon, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Trevi Fountain, Rome is the nation's capital and serves as a major nexus of European business. As a result, global corporations have headquarters in this city alongside government offices and embassies.

Top 10 Things to See in Rome

Piazza di Spagna & Spanish Steps

Piazza di Spagna is the most famous square in Rome. Shaped like a crooked bow tie and surrounded by muted, shuttered facades, Piazza di Spagna draws crowds nonstop during the day year-round and well into the night in summer. The steps were built in the 1720s to link the square with the French church of Trinita' dei Monti.

    Trevi Fountain

Nicola Salvi's theatrical design for Rome's largest and most famous fountain was completed in 1762. The central figures are Neptune, flanked by two Tritons, one trying to master an unruly seahorse, the other leading a quieter beast, symbolizing the two contrasting moods of the sea.

    The Vatican

Vatican City, the world capital of Catholicism, is the world's smallest state. It occupies 106 acres within high walls tended by the Vatican Guards. It was the site where St Peter was martyred and buried, and it became the residence of the popes who succeeded him. The Papal palaces, next to the great basilica of St. Peter's, are home to the Sistine Chapel, the eclectic collections of Vatican museums, and, of course, the Pope.

    Trastevere

Trastevere is a picturesque old quarter whose inhabitants consider themselves to be the only true Romans. The proletarian identity of this site slowly transforms each year due to the growth of nearby trendy restaurants, clubs, and shops.

    Colosseum

Rome's greatest amphitheatre was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 72 CE. Deadly gladiator combats and wild animal fights were staged by emperors and wealthy citizens, most likely to gain popularity. Slaughter proliferated: at the inaugural games in 80 CE, over 9,000 wild animals were killed. The Colosseum could hold up to 55,000 people, seated according to rank.

    Roman Forum

In the early Republic, the Forum was a chaotic place with food stalls, brothels, temples, and the Senate House. By the 2nd century CE, it was decided that Rome required a more salubrious center, and the food stores were replaced by business centers and law courts. The Forum remained the ceremonial center of the city under the Empire, with succeeding emperors renovating old buildings and erecting new temples and monuments.

    Piazza Navona and Surroundings

No other Piazza in Roma can rival the theatricality of Piazza Navona. The luxurious cafes are the social center of the city. Day and night there is always something going on in the pedestrian area around the flamboyant Baroque fountains. The Baroque is also represented in many of the area's churches. To discover an older Rome, walk along Via del Governo Vecchio to admire the facades of Renaissance buildings, browse in the fascinating antiques shops, and lunch in one of many trattorias. Rome's most beautiful Baroque piazza follows the shape of a 1st century CE stadium built by Domitian, which was used for athletic contests. Until the 19th century, the piazza was flooded in August by stopping the fountain outlets. The rich would splash around in carriages, while street urchins paddled.

    Pantheon

The maze of narrow streets around the Pantheon is a mixture of lively restaurants, cafes, and some of Rome's finest sights. This is also the city's financial and political district, home to Parliament and other governmental offices. The Pantheon itself, with its awe-inspiring domed interior, has long been a symbol of the city. The Pantheon, the Roman "Temple of all Gods," is the most extraordinary and best-preserved ancient building in Rome.

    Castel Sant'Angelo

The massive fortress of Castel Sant'Angelo takes its name from the vision of the Archangel Michael by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century as he led a procession across the bridge, praying for the end of the plague.

The castle began life in 139 CE as the emperor Hadrian's mausoleum. Since then it has been a bridgehead in the Emperor's Aurelian city wall, a medieval citadel and prison, and a place of safety for Popes during times of political unrest. A corridor links it with the Vatican Palace, providing an escape route for the Pope.

    Palatine

The Palatine, once the residence of emperors and aristocrats, is the most pleasant of Rome's ancient sites. The ruins range from the simple house in which Augustus is thought to have lived, to the Domus Flavia and Domus Augustana, the public and private wings of a luxurious palace built by Domitian.

International Travel with Infants and Young Children

    Breastfeeding and Travel

    Deciding About Travel and Breastfeeding

Travel need not be a reason to stop breastfeeding. A mother traveling with a nursing infant may find breastfeeding makes travel easier than it would be if traveling with a formula-fed infant. A mother traveling without her nursing infant or child may take steps to preserve breastfeeding and maintain her milk supply while separated. The major factors for a mother traveling without her nursing infant or child to consider are the amount of time she has to prepare for her trip, her flexibility of time while traveling, her options for storing expressed milk while traveling, the duration of her travel, and her destination. Mothers planning travel away from a nursing infant may access information from her pediatrician or from an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).Mothers may find an IBCLC in their area at http://gotwww.net/ilca/ or http://www.iblce.org/old/.

A mother who travels without her nursing infant or child may find her milk supply somewhat diminished upon her return. This does not need to be a reason to stop breastfeeding. A mother who returns to her nursing infant or child can continue breastfeeding and supplement as needed until her milk supply returns to its prior level. Often, after returning from travel, a nursing infant or child will help bring her milk supply to its prior level. Occasionally, however, nursing infants or children who are separated from their mother for an extended time have difficulty transitioning back to breastfeeding.

    Preparation for Travel While Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding mothers may wish to find local breastfeeding support before beginning travel and keep pertinent contact information handy throughout the trip. La Leche League International has breastfeeding experts in many countries (http://www.lalecheleague.org).

A mother traveling with a nursing infant younger than 6 months old need not plan to supplement breastfeeding because of travel (1). Breastfed infants do not require water supplementation, even in extreme heat environments (2). While traveling, the best way to both maintain a mother’s milk supply and ensure ideal nutrition and hydration for the child is frequent, unrestricted nursing opportunities. Breastfeeding also protects the infant from water that is possibly contaminated.

A breastfeeding mother traveling without her nursing infant or child may wish to produce and store a supply of milk to be fed to the infant or child during her absence by another caregiver. Building a supply to be fed in her absence takes time and patience and is most successful when begun gradually, many weeks in advance of her departure. It is also important to consider that infants who have never consumed milk from a bottle or cup need opportunities to practice this skill with another caregiver prior to the mother’s departure.

    Maintaining Lactation During Travel

A breastfeeding mother traveling without her nursing infant or child who does not build a supply of milk to be fed in her absence can still maintain her milk supply while she is traveling. These efforts will help maintain her breastfeeding relationship for when she and her infant or child can be together again.

Milk expression approximately every 3-4 hours for infants less than 6 months old, less frequently for older infants and children, helps a mother maintain her milk supply and provides milk that she may choose to bring home for her infant or child. A mother who will be separated from her infant or child for a long period of time while traveling might have a difficult time maintaining lactation. In general, separation of a week or less does not pose a major problem for a mother wishing to maintain breastfeeding while separated from her infant or child. This time is more flexible as the child becomes older and complementary foods play a larger role in the child’s diet.

Depending on her destination, a mother may need to plan for milk expression without a reliable electrical power source. Expressing milk without an electrical power source is less reliable for maintaining milk supply over a long period of time than expressing milk with a hospital-grade electric breast pump. Intermittent milk expression can be successful with battery and manual breast pumps, as well as manual (hand) expression. Manual (hand) expression is the most hygienic way to collect milk. Mothers planning on travel to locations without reliable electrical power should learn and practice manual expression techniques well before travel is to begin.

The destination for travel can impact decisions for milk storage. Expressed milk should be stored in clean, tightly sealed containers. Any container that may be cleaned well with hot, soapy water and that seals tightly and reliably may be used. Once milk is cooled, a cold chain needs to be maintained until the milk is consumed. Refrigerated milk can subsequently be frozen; however, once frozen milk is fully thawed, it should be used within 1 hour.

Handling expressed breast milk does not require special medical precautions. Breast milk may be stored in any refrigerator or other location where other foods would be safe and may be stored with other foods. Breast milk requires no special labeling, it is not considered a biohazard, and the universal precautions for prevention of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and other bloodborne pathogens (known widely as “Universal Precautions”) do not apply to it (3). Guidance on human milk storage is found in Table 8-5.

Immunizations and Medications for Breastfeeding Mothers During Travel

    IMMUNIZATIONS

Most nursing mothers may be immunized routinely, based on recommendations for the specific travel itinerary. Neither inactivated nor live vaccines administered to a lactating woman affect the safety of breast-feeding for mothers or infants. Breast-feeding does not adversely affect immunization and is not a contraindication for any vaccine (5). However, there is a theoretical risk to the infant with the use of yellow fever vaccine in breastfeeding mothers. Vaccination of nursing mothers should be avoided because of the theoretical risk for the transmission of 17D virus to the breastfed infant. When travel of nursing mothers to high-risk yellow fever-endemic areas cannot be avoided or postponed, such persons can be vaccinated (see Chapter 4) (6). Breastfed infants should be vaccinated according to routine recommended schedules.

    MEDICATIONS

Breastfeeding mothers should take the usual adult dose of the antimalarial drug appropriate for the itinerary. Nursing mothers with infants weighing less than 5 kg (approximately 11 pounds) should not take atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone) for prophylaxis. Data are limited on the use of doxycycline during breastfeeding; however, most experts consider its short-term use compatible with breastfeeding. Primaquine is contraindicated during lactation unless both the mother and breastfed infant have normal G6PD levels. It is critical to note that breastfed infants require their own antimalarial medication if traveling to an endemic area. Mother’s milk does not provide malaria protection, even when the mother is taking an adequate medication and dose for herself.

    Traveling with a Breastfed Infant

A mother traveling with a nursing infant or child may wish to consider a sling or other soft infant carrier for use while traveling. This helps maintain breast-feeding by increasing opportunities for unrestricted nursing and increasing skin-to-skin contact with the child, while also protecting the child from environmental hazards and easing the burden of carrying a child. Infants are particularly susceptible to painful pressure due to eustachian tube collapse as a result of pressure changes during air travel. Breastfeeding during ascent and descent often relieves this discomfort.

X rays used in airport screenings have no effect on breastfeeding, breast milk, or the process of lactation (7). Expressed breast milk does not need to be declared at US Customs when returning to the United States. However, recommendations regarding the carrying of liquids on board aircraft are subject to change and should be checked prior to travel. Breast pumps are usually considered personal items during air travel and may be carried on and stowed underneath the passenger seat, similar to a laptop computer, purse, or diaper bag. It is always prudent to check current airline security guidelines.

A nursing mother with travelers’ diarrhea should increase her own fluid intake and frequency of breastfeeding; she should not stop breastfeeding because of travelers’ diarrhea. Breastfed infants are protected from travelers’ diarrhea both because breastfeeding protects them from consuming contaminated items and because a nursing mother does not pass on travelers’ diarrhea to her infant via breastfeeding. The use of oral rehydration salts (ORS) is fully compatible with breastfeeding.

In addition to the usual contents of the travel health kit (see Chapter 2), breastfeeding mothers may wish to include an antifungal cream, which can be used to treat periareolar yeast infections.
